It has become a commonplace in cultural discussion in the last half century to recognize the power of film as a significant shaper of American society and its values.
This popular annual lecture, delivered over a dozen times a year for over ten years, seeks to understand this phenomenon and make a case for the Academy Award nominees for best picture as both a barometer and a shaper of current American moral and intellectual standards.
After briefly introducing and analyzing each of the films, Dr. Trotter looks at common themes expressed in them and relates those ideas to societal norms and questions present in America today.
Speaker: Drew Trotter is the Executive Director of the Consortium of Christian Study Centers. He has written on film and popular culture for over thirty years in such publications as Books & Culture, Christianity Today and Critique, and in the field of Biblical studies published Interpreting the Epistle to the Hebrews (Baker, 1997).
For over twenty years, Drew has presented a seminar entitled Show and Tell: How to View a Movie Responsibly, helping laypeople and students in churches, Christian college and secular university environments understand this powerful medium and how to think about its influence both on the individual and the society. He has also taught seminars on popular culture, university education in America today, a Biblical model of discipleship and how to interpret the Scriptures.
A well-respected Bible teacher, Drew has lectured and preached at seminaries, churches and colleges throughout the United States and Canada on a wide variety of topics including prayer, discipleship, and Christian cultural awareness.
Drew has three sons, two daughters-in-law and three grandchildren and lives with his wife Marie in Charlottesville, VA.
